Ingredients That You’ll Need:

  • Chicken: The recipe calls for cooked chicken. Leftover shredded chicken, rotisserie chicken, skillet-fried chicken breast, or boiled chicken can all be used. These will all have slightly different tastes. Try shredded or rotisserie chicken if you want a tender chicken. If you are cooking diced chicken, pan-fry it until golden brown and cooked through.
  • Cream of mushroom soup: You will need one undiluted can of cream of mushroom soup.
  • Sour cream: It is this ingredient that makes this chicken casserole creamy and smooth. If you are not a fan of sour cream, this recipe probably won’t appeal to you.
  • Stuffing: The easiest way to make a quick and easy stuffing topping is to use a box of dry stuffing mix (such as Stove Top stuffing or Pepperidge Farm stuffing). In my case, I used a six-ounce package of stuffing. If you prefer, you can use a larger box, or you can use two boxes.
  • Chicken broth or stock: For the stuffing, I like to use low-sodium chicken stock instead of water.

What Can I Use Instead Of Sour Cream in this Chicken Casserole?

You may need to substitute sour cream with another ingredient for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Milk allergy: Allergies to cow’s milk are common. Milk allergies affect between 2 and 3% of children under the age of three. Despite statistics showing that 80% of kids outgrow this allergy, some people must avoid milk for life.
  • Lactose intolerance: Lactose is a sugar found in dairy products. Those who are lactose intolerant are unable to digest it due to a deficiency in lactase, the enzyme needed to help it break down.
  • Vegan diet: Some people choose not to consume animal products. For instance, those on a vegan diet eat only plant-based foods due to many reasons, including health, animal welfare, and environmental concerns.
  • Health reasons: Milk and milk products are avoided by many people for a variety of health reasons, including skin disorders and hormonal imbalances. Others fear that dairy cows are given antibiotics and growth hormones.
  • Low-fat diets: The fat content of regular sour cream is high. The majority of the calories in regular sour cream come from fat. People who wish to lose weight often choose to cut fat, regardless of how important this nutrient is.
  • Taste or missing ingredient: Many people dislike sour cream’s tangy flavor. Or, maybe there is no sour cream available to bake a favorite cake or top a freshly cooked pot of chili, so a substitute is needed.

There are a number of dairy products that can be substituted for sour cream, such as Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, crème fraîche, and buttermilk.

  • Greek Yogurt: Greek yogurt is an excellent substitute for sour cream. Most of the whey is strained out of Greek yogurt so that it is thicker than regular yogurt. This creates a thicker, tangier version of yogurt that is very similar to sour cream.
  • Cottage Cheese: The history of this cheese is rich. In the 18th century, American settlers used leftover milk from butter-making to make cottage cheese.
  • Crème Fraîche: The French word crème fraîche literally means fresh cream. Similar to sour cream, this dairy product is made by adding a bacterial culture to heavy cream.
  • Buttermilk: Buttermilk is the liquid left over from making butter from cultured cream.
  • Coconut Milk: Coconut milk is a great substitute for sour cream. It is important not to confuse coconut milk with coconut water. Coconut milk comes from the meat of freshly grated coconuts.
  • Cashews: Cashews are a great substitute for sour cream, which might surprise you.
  • Soy: On the market, there are many soy-based sour cream substitutes that are suitable for vegans and those with a milk allergy.
