How Do You Know When Cod Is Cooked?

If a food thermometer isn’t an available option, you may check the doneness of your Cod by inserting a fork into the thickest part of the fillet at an angle and giving it a little twist, if it’s done, the fish will no longer have a transparent or raw aspect, and it will peel apart easily.

Should You Wash Cod Before Cooking?

No, you should not wash your cod before cooking unlike other seafood like shellfish, clams, and mussels as they need to be rinsed before being cooked, because they might be full of sand and grit, you will need to thoroughly rinse that off of them before eating them.

Ingredients For Baked Cod

  • Cod: I much prefer cod that has been caught in the wild (and this is one of my favorite places to get it), but you can use any kind of cod you like. To ensure that the fillets cook at the same rate, look for ones that weigh about 4 ounces each and have a comparable thickness. For the majority of cod recipes, thicker fillets are preferable because they dry out less quickly.
  • Butter: The flavor is greatly enhanced by butter. I prefer grass-fed, unsalted butter. However, if you need a version that does not contain dairy, you can substitute olive oil for the dairy in this recipe.
  • Lemon: Because we’ll be using both the juice and the zest of the lemon, you’ll need a fresh lemon rather than lemon juice from a bottle.
  • Garlic Powder: I find using garlic powder to be the most time-efficient method, but if you prefer, you can substitute a couple of cloves of fresh garlic that has been minced or crushed in its place.
  • Parsley: I used curly fresh parsley, but flat-leaf parsley works just as well.
  • Sea salt and black pepper Parsley: I used curly fresh parsley. In my recipe for baked salmon, I used dried dill, but you could easily substitute fresh dill or add some if you prefer.
  • Different versions: Experiment with different seasonings for your cod! Paprika, lemon.

How To Make Cod At 400?

  • Turn the temperature in the oven up to 400 degrees F. (204 degrees C). You have the option of baking the cod fillets straight from the freezer, or you can thaw them in a bowl of cold water first. (If you have the time, I recommend thawing the butter first because it makes it much simpler to apply the butter without it solidifying.)
  • To dry the cod fillets, you can use paper towels to pat them down.
  • Place them in a single layer in a baking dish that is 9 by 13 inches.
  • Melt the butter in a microwave-safe bowl or a saucepan on the stovetop, whichever is more convenient. Take the pan off the heat.
  • Mix in the juice of the lemon and the zest of the lemon.
  • The cod fillets should be brushed with lemon butter. Add garlic powder, coarse sea salt, and ground black pepper to taste.
  • To season the other side, flip the fish over and repeat the process with the lemon butter.
  • Bake the cod for 12 to 15 minutes (the exact time will depend on its thickness), or until it is opaque and easily flakes apart when poked with a fork.
