  • Mayonnaise – This is the secret to the sauce’s velvety smoothness. It’s possible to create your own, but you can also buy it for convenience. You can tell the difference in the quality of the Marie Rose sauce when you use the best mayonnaise you can find. In order to get that rich, creamy taste, choose full-fat mayonnaise.
  • Ketchup – You should use the best quality ketchup you can find as low-quality ketchup tends to taste like chemicals. You can also whip up some homemade ketchup with our recipe for Healthy Tomato Ketchup.
  • Worcestershire Sauce – The sauce gets a wonderful tang from this.
  • Lemon – This helps to lighten the sauce up a bit and also adds some freshness and brightness.
  • Tabasco – Although it is not required, Tabasco is wonderful for providing a touch of heat to this sauce.

Vegan and Vegetarian Options

If you make a few adjustments, Jamie Oliver’s Marie Rose Sauce recipe can work for vegan and vegetarian diets.

Replace the Worcestershire sauce with a vegan-friendly alternative, such as Henderson’s Relish or soy sauce, and use a vegan mayonnaise.

How to Make Jamie Oliver’s Marie Rose Sauce

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the mayonnaise with the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, and Tabasco sauce.
  • Mix until everything is well blended.

How to Serve Marie Rose Sauce

This sauce can be used for a variety of purposes. We prefer to use it as a dipping sauce for crab sticks since it pairs so well with crab and other seafood. However, Marie Rose Sauce can also be used as a spread of choice on a Salmon Patties and Po Boy Sandwich, and it goes wonderfully with both of those ingredients.

You can do a lot with it already, but there’s a lot more potential there. It’s a tasty alternative to plain mayonnaise and works great as a sandwich sauce. It’s typically associated with a Reuben sandwich in the United States, but we think it’d be delicious on any deli meat sandwich such as a head cheese sandwich.

If you add a bit more lemon juice to thin it down, it also makes a great salad dressing.

Recipe Tips

  • Spicy seasonings like paprika and cayenne pepper can be used for an additional boost of flavor.
  • Use full-fat mayonnaise for a richer, creamier taste, but if you prefer, you may use low-fat mayo instead.

How to Store Marie Rose Sauce

Marie Rose sauce can be stored in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to 5 days; however, as it includes mayonnaise, I do not suggest you freeze it.

Followed the recipe. I had run out of lemons and subbed in lime. It was a little bland so I added 2 tsp. of horseradish sauce to give it a lift. Nice.
