What is Wedge Salad?

A wedge salad gets its name from the wedge of iceberg lettuce that it’s served with.
The salad is topped with creamy blue cheese dressing, crisp and crunchy bacon, and sweet tomatoes.
Sliced red onions and shredded cheddar cheese can be added as toppings.


It became popular when steakhouses began serving it. Many steakhouses still serve it today! (Does anyone remember Outback?)

Ingredients That You’ll Need:

To make this salad taste its best, use fresh lettuce and tomatoes. The size of lettuce heads varies, so choose carefully. You may need more than one, depending on how many you are serving.

Depending on the size of the head, it is better to cut it in half or thirds rather than into quarters. For exact measurements, see the Pioneer Woman recipe card at the bottom of the post.

  • Iceberg Lettuce: Do not substitute for anything else. A classic wedge gets its name from the shape of an iceberg.
  • Tomato: The tomato I used was a Roma! Make sure to choose a firm, full-flavored tomato. You can also use homegrown tomatoes! They have the best flavor!
  • Bacon: Precook your bacon or buy some bacon bits from the store so that you don’t have to cook it yourself!
  • Red Onion: Chop the onion finely so that you get some in every bite!
  • Blue Cheese Dressing: You can use store-bought blue cheese dressing, but for the most delicious flavor.
  • Blue Cheese Crumbles: You can use more or less depending on your preference.

Is iceberg lettuce healthy?

Yes, and here’s why:

  • It gets a bad rap, but lettuce is good for you, and iceberg lettuce is no exception.
  • While the iceberg isn’t as nutrient-dense as darker leafy greens like kale and spinach, it still contains important vitamins, and it’s certainly not junk food!
  • A high fiber, low calorie, highly hydrating smoothie.
  • If you’re trying to lose weight, this is a good choice because it will fill you up without supplying you with extra calories.
  • It keeps longer than most salad greens, which is a huge advantage.
  • Several recent studies suggest iceberg might contain a cancer-fighting compound, so don’t give up on it just yet.

How to Cut and Wash the Lettuce?

Lettuce heads should first be sliced in half, then each half should be cut in half.
You will end up with four quarters, one for each salad.

Washing:

  1. Fruit/vegetable wash should be diluted with water in a bowl as instructed on the bottle. Lower the lettuce gently into the bowl and let it soak for a few seconds.
  2. After rinsing with cold water, pat the lettuce gently with paper towels.

What are the best toppings for Pioneer Woman Wedge Salad?

the classic topping for a wedge salad is bacon, tomato, red onion, and more blue cheese along with blue cheese dressing. But that doesn’t mean you cannot take a wedge of iceberg lettuce and make it your own. Wedge salads are easily customizable and still will be absolutely delicious.

  • Add Different Vegetables: Try avocados, cucumbers, olives, and chopped peppers or celery.
  • Add Crunch: Use croutons to add a bit of crunch if you want to go the extra mile then you can make your croutons using this recipe.
  • Cheese: If you want to try a different cheese then try cheddar, feta, parmesan, or gorgonzola.
  • Not a fan of Blue Cheese Dressing: Although blue cheese is the standard, you can substitute for the ranch, caesar, or creamy parmesan dressing.
  • Add Some Protein: Add chopped grilled chicken or steak. Or dice up hard-boiled eggs.

Can I grill my lettuce?

You can absolutely do that! Personally, I love the look and taste of charred food. You should cut and clean your lettuce as usual before grilling. Sprinkle some salt and pepper on top after adding olive oil. For charred results, grill the flat side for a couple of minutes on each side.
